Book Review: “The Girl On The Train” by Paula Hawkins

Synopsis from  goodreads_logo_140-b533b2204258ee95a93b7c7882d24080

Has anyone ever experienced a train journey being a spectator in other people’s lives, just for a brief moment? I know I certainly have. Maybe not to the extent of Rachel’s experience in this novel but I can certainly relate.

This is my first thriller read this year and thrilling it was.

Meet Rachel! THE girl on the train, who travels back and forth from her home to her “job” in a constant inebriated state.

Also meet Megan (aka Jess), who seems to think that, out of boredom, life is a game she absolutely has to win and is completely oblivious to the dangers ahead.

Finally meet Anna, the mistress /now wife to Tom (Rachel’s ex), who is completely and utterly unapologetic about her behaviour.

These three women lives, will become inextricably linked by a tragic event.

Don’t be fooled by my introduction here, there is more to them than meets the eyes.
I, for one loved how the author lulls you into a false sense of security when you are first introduced to Rachel. Some of the scenes described at the beginning of the novel are hilarious. But quickly, you are taken on a roller coaster ride of a read that will make you turn the pages so fast you’ll get paper cuts. And here lies the mastery and great story telling behind a great “whodunit” plot!!

Throughout this read I fell fully engaged, and at times I really felt the need to stage an intervention for Rachel, shake Megan until she gets her acts straight and slap Anna into next week, but most of all, I really wanted to help Rachel solve the case she had taken so much to heart even if she was clumsily stumbling over her own feet doing it.

Now, is it going to end well for Rachel and these other women? Well, I guess you’re just going to have to find out, aren’t you?
