And welcome to my first wrap up of the year.
I like to think that I started 2016 with quite a selection actually. Most were YA reads, one of them a fantasy book.
So, let’s start with my first read, “The Icarus Show” by debut author Sally Christie. Meeting Alex Meadows was like travelling back in time to school where manoeuvring through the day without being picked on could be quite a task. But then Alex’s attention is diverted by his investigation of the mysterious boy who claims he’s able to fly. It was quite a nice read and you can find out what I thought about it here.
I next reviewed “Maresi” by Maria Turtschaninoff, a piece translated by Annie Prime. Maresi was a fabulous read about a young woman living in a women only sanctuary where the secrets and magics of “The Mother” are kept. I had not read a fantasy novel in a while and this one had the right mix of myth and legends. Not too overpowering, just right.
My third read was “All Of The Above” by Juno Dawson and oh my god! If you love contemporary YA, you will absolutely love this. This novel follows Toria, new girl in town who has to make a new life for herself. After settling in, she falls in love with a boy…and then with girl. I won’t spoil it for you but you can read my review if you want to have a feel for it. It is one that I highly recommend.
“Anna And The Swallow Man” was next. A historical novel set in the dawn of World War II and written by Gavriel Savit. This was beautifully written, but unfortunately did not quite work for me. I felt like I was left hanging and wanted to know more about the characters but the author kept them a mystery to the end.
And if I had tick pick a fave, it definitely would have to be “All Of The Above”.
If you read any of those novels please let me know what you thought.
