STALKERS – Part 3

Imogen Grey followed her partner Adrian Miles around the supermarket reluctantly as he piled vegetables into her trolley under her scornful gaze.

“You can’t live on pot noodles Grey.”

“I eat other things.” She muttered.

“I’ll teach you how to cook a Lasagne or something simple. Seriously Grey, you need some nutrients or something.”

“I’m healthier than you by a long shot Miley, you should worry about yourself. I run 10k a day.”
“Trust me, I am an amazing cook.” He said as he threw a bag of carrots into the trolley.

Imogen knew what would happen, she would put these things in her fridge and push them out of the way every evening to get to the beer.  She grew up on burnt pizza and fish-finger sandwiches, consequently her palette was not refined in the slightest.

“What do you want in return?”

“Well actually I was wondering if you could come with me to see this woman.”

“What? I hope you’re not trying to involve me in your sordid sex life.” She took the trolley from Miles and walked towards the checkout before he had a chance to put anymore green crap in it.

“No, it’s my neighbour. She’s being stalked, or at least she thinks she is. I figured she might want to talk to another woman.”

“Denise was busy, huh?” She grabbed a box of donuts and watched as Miles shook his head.

“I know, I’m such a cliché.”

She swiped most of the trolley but left the pak choi, whatever that was.

“Detective Miles?” A voice said from behind them, they both turned to see a nurse standing at the self-checkout behind them, she was holding a box of cat-food.

“I was just talking about you to my partner.” He turned to Imogen, “this is Lucy.”

Imogen smiled at the woman who looked kind of nervous. On edge.

“I was just on my way home from work, had to pick up some food for Mr Kwan.”

Imogen’s puzzled look must have been less subtle than she thought because the woman held up the box of cat food.

“Well, I can come with you. You know, if you’re worried.”

“Oh, yes, that would be great.” Lucy smiled and tucked her red curls behind her ears. “Thanks Adrian.”

“I’ll drop you home on the way if you want, Grey.”

“No, it’s ok. I’ll come with.” She picked up the shopping. She wasn’t sure, but she thought she saw a hardness appear in Lucy’s smile at her offer to tag along. Oh yes, Imogen’s Spidey sense was tingling.
