It was a tough decision as this piece was competing with “Everything I have never told you” by Celeste Ng which is also a fantastic read…but I have a soft spot for the West Indies being from one of the islands myself.
I really hope that @laurenfsharma writings get onto a lot of reading lists in 2015…This was a beautiful read.
This little gem of a book is now part of my 2014 favourites.
This debut novel will take you on a journey through to Marcia’s life, a young lady born and raised in Trinidad which to all of us would sound like paradise. She however has to deal with issues that are well beyond her young years.
What will stay with me…the feeling of being there.
For example the author provides meticulous descriptions of food, smells and spices that are almost palpable while reading, which contrast beautifully with some very difficult topics raised throughout the book.
You cannot help but relate to the characters, and suffice it to say that Marcia’s story will resonate with many, it has certainly with me.
